Certificate of Advanced Study in Digital Image Management
Fact Sheet
The program is sponsored with funds from the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS). Students apply to and are admitted by the Graduate School, and the Department of Library & Information Sciences at the University of North Texas. Each student develops a plan of study for the Certificate under the advisement of Dr. Hastings.
Program partners are the African American Museum of Art in Dallas Fair Park, Dallas Museum of Art, Denton Public Library System and the School of Visual Arts at UNT.
A minimum of 24 credit hours is needed to complete the Certificate of Advanced Study. Depending on the skills and expertise of the student, up to 30 credit hours may be required. The following is required for the Certificate:
- SLIS 5960, Digital Imaging Laboratory. 3 credit hours, required each semester of study for a total of 12 credit hours. The lab is designed to provide each student in the program an opportunity to be involved with the production of digital images; the creation, maintenance and management of digital information databases; the use and management of advanced network and information technologies including website design and maintenance; and the client markets of libraries, archives, information centers and museums.
- Two of the following courses for a total of 6 credit hours:
- SLIS 5205, Information Indexing, Abstracting and Retrieval. 3 credit hours. Analysis of indexing and retrieval systems. Manual and machine indexing and abstracting. Computer-based systems. File organization and maintenance; information representation and coding; storage and retrieval technology; natural language processing; thesaurus construction; searching strategies. Systems design, operation and evaluation.
- SLIS 5711, Internet Applications, Services, and Management for Information Professionals. 3 credit hours. The technology, applications, resources, and service opportunities of the Internet and the networked environment. Development of awareness, understanding, and knowledge of the Internet from the perspectives of technology, standards, content, organization, policy, and users. Conceptual and practical aspects related to the development and management of networked applications, networked resources, and networked services for use in information environments and information-based organizations.
- SLIS 5713, Telecommunications for Information Professionals. 3 credit hours. A foundation course concerned with digital and analog forms of electronic communications, design and performance of networks and their relationship to the provision of information services. Emphasis on management issues for libraries and information agencies.
- SLIS 5714, Website Development. 3 credit hours. This course is designed to meet the need of government and industry for entry level personnel capable of establishing a Website, composing text and graphic files for the site, writing scripts for the site for interactive applications, installing search engines, and creating reports on site usage.
- In addition the following courses or equivalent courses from the School of Visual Arts are required for a total of 6 credit hours:
- ART 5390, Seminar in Art Museum. 3 hours. Study of the functions of an art museum – collection, preservation, exhibitions, research and interpretation of art objects. Visits to North Texas art museums required.
- ART 5560, Seminar in Art Museum Education. 3 hours. Study of the museum’s public role, centering on history, theory, and practice of art museum education. Audience identification and careers and practices stressed, toward aim of understanding, developing, expanding, and using learning opportunities inherent in museums.

For the Certificate, a total of 24 credit hours are needed:
