Students meet at the Institute host site for four-day or nine-day Institutes and complete the remainder of the course online. The Institutes consist of classroom instruction, technology training, and social events. Department of Library and Information Sciences believes that these three elements provide the best opportunity for individual success in a distance education program.
Who takes the Web Institutes?
The Web Institute courses are open to all students pursuing the Masters degree through Department of Library and Information Sciences.
What courses are offered in the Web Institute format?
Department of Library and Information Sciences offers it’s three core courses (5000, 5200, and 5600) in a Web Institute format. These courses are required for all master’s programs of study. These courses can also be taken in a traditional classroom setting at locations on the UNT Denton and Dallas campuses. All students (except those in the School Librarianship Program of Study) must begin the master’s program with SLIS 5000. (see
How many credits can I handle?)I’ve been contacted by Department of Library and Information Sciences and now I’m on the Institute list. Does this mean that I’m registered?
No. If we have contacted you and added your name to one of our Institute email list, it means that your application is complete or very near complete and that you are intending to enroll in one of the next semester’s Institutes. Being added to the list means that we are holding a place for you in the Institute. Students who have been added to the list will have first priority when registering for classes. Other students will be allowed to register as space permits. Please see the
Master’s Admission Checklist for an explanation of this process.
The list is a way for Department of Library and Information Sciences to keep incoming students informed about logistics and schedules for the Institutes. Any major changes to the information on the Web site will also be announced here.
Students who are currently enrolled have the opportunity to register during Early Registration. All new students will register during Regular Registration. See the
Academic/Registration calendars on the Registrar’s Web site for registration schedules and fee payment deadlines for the semester you intend to enroll. Be sure to pay all fees before the fee payment deadline or your registration will be cancelled automatically.
All registration at UNT is done over the Web or the telephone. The easiest and most convenient method of registering is to use the
My UNT system. By using My UNT, you can register for classes, view your schedule or tuition bill, and make fee payments.
How many credits am I taking?
SLIS 5000 is one credit and SLIS 5200 and SLIS 5600 are each 4 credits.
How many credits can I handle?
All students (except those in the School Librarianship Program of Study) must begin their master’s program with SLIS 5000. You can take 5000 with either or both of the other core courses (5200 or 5600). You can take other courses concurrently with the core courses with the approval of your advisor.
Part-time enrollment at the graduate level is considered to be 4-5 credits per semester. Full-time enrollment is at least 9 credits per semester. At the master’s level you should expect to spend 4 hours outside of class for every credit hour you take. For example, if you are taking 5000 and 5600, a total of 5 credit hours, you should expect to spend 20 hours per week on coursework.
When do I need to be on campus for an Institute? Can I leave early?
The agenda for each class is posted on the Web Institute Web site. In general all classes meet from 8am to 5pm and, because these institutes provide the foundation for the remainder of the course which is delivered online, you are required to attend the entire time. Check here for the Department of Library and Information Sciences
Web Institute Attendancy Policy.
